About

Hyakusaiji Temple is a very old temple located in the mountains east of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake. It is said to have originated around the year 600 AD. During the Heian period and the Middle Ages, it was a large temple complex with nearly 1,000 monks’ quarters in the North, East, West, and South valleys, but it suffered damage from fires and other disasters, leading to its current state. However, it remains covered in beautiful forests and moss, attracting many visitors. It is said that Luis Frois, a Portuguese priest who visited Japan in the 16th century, referred to this place as a paradise on earth.

Exploring Hyakusaiji Temple feels like a kind of hiking. There’s quite a bit of elevation change, so it can be challenging. However, the path winds through the landscape, and with each turn, the scenery shifts, keeping it very refreshing. Look at this long staircase. Surrounded by tall trees, it feels as if you’re walking down an endless hallway.

I happened to stumble upon this place purely by chance during an aimless drive. I am lucky man.

And look at this!
These are the giant sandals, the symbol of Hyakusaiji Temple. Perhaps you could call them traditional Japanese slippers made of straw ( it is gotten during rice farming. ) They are said to be 2.5 meters tall and over 1 meter wide. There’s a legend that touching them will bring you health, a life free of illness, and longevity.
