About

I’ve been using Amazfit and its Zep app for about a week now, so I’ll briefly summarize my current review.

The review

First, the first thing users are likely to interact with is the selection of the watch face. A decent number of faces are available even for free. You can decide not only how the time is displayed, but also which information to show on the face, such as heart rate, weather, and steps. Fortunately, I was able to find a design that I like eventually.

What’s interesting is that you can display your own custom designs linked with information. Amazfit has a dedicated website that facilitates this kind of customization. There are also samples provided, so it would be fun to play around with them.

Next, you’ll likely notice the daily records of heart rate and sleep. Having never tracked my heart rate before, this was an interesting experience for me personally. It was fascinating to see how my heart rate quickly dropped when I drank warm tea during work, and how it was higher when working in the office compared to working from home.

This image is a graph showing how my heart rate decreased after drinking hot tea. It gradually dropped from around 80.

Lastly, there’s the tracking of walking and running. Personally, I was satisfied simply being able to record my hiking routes, so the functionality was more than sufficient. I think it’s a feature that can also motivate one to run.

The ability to download and use local maps is also a fantastic feature.

Moreover, a somewhat technical feature that engineers will appreciate is the ability to verify whether the ephemeris data has been acquired on the smartphone. Normally, GPS requires a cold start in environments without a network connection, which can significantly delay position fixing. This can be frustrating for users because they are not aware of the situation. However, the Zepp app has the advantage of displaying this information, which can alleviate stress.

Complaints?

While I don’t have any major complaints, if I had to mention one, it would be nice to have a touring mode that can track movement while driving a car, riding a train, or biking. The device, being an outdoor watch, has functions for walking and running, but it doesn’t seem well-suited for recording faster modes of transportation. I’d like to be able to use it as a tool for traveling as well.
